Deion Sanders faces the possibility of losing his left foot due to circulation problems that led to the amputation of two toes in 2021.
As part of the preparations for his first season as head football coach, Sanders allowed the camera crews from “Thee Pregame Show” to document his meeting with his medical team at the University of Colorado.
In an 11-minute segment released on YouTube, Sanders engaged in discussions with his orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ken Hunt, vascular surgeons Dr. Donald Jacobs and Dr. Max Wohlauer, and athletic trainer Lauren Askevold. They explored the extent of his daily pain and the potential next steps.
Jacobs cautioned about the risks involved, stating that Sanders could not only lose another toe but also the entire foot. Sanders, aware of the risks, responded by acknowledging that he already has only eight toes.
Sanders shared that he has lost sensation on the bottom of his left foot and expressed his desire to undergo any recommended procedure as soon as possible. He emphasized the need for prompt action, as once the football season begins, his schedule will become significantly busier.
“I want to have the procedure done this summer because once we get into the thick of things, I won’t have the time,” Sanders expressed. “This is the most opportune moment for me to address it.”
During the 2021 season, Sanders had to miss three games at Jackson State University due to the amputation of two toes.
In December, Sanders assumed the position of head coach for the struggling Colorado Buffaloes football program, following their disappointing 1-11 season in 2022. Since his appointment, there has been a remarkable resurgence of interest in the team, which has only experienced two winning seasons since 2016. One of those successful seasons was a 4-2 record during the pandemic-affected 2020 season.
The enthusiasm surrounding the Buffaloes’ program is evident, as their spring game in April sold out, and for the first time in almost thirty years, they have sold out their season ticket allotment. Colorado’s season will commence with an away game against TCU on September 2, followed by a home game against former Big 12 rival Nebraska at Folsom Field a week later.
