LONDON (AP) — The late Martin Amis, a highly influential British author from his generation, was posthumously knighted by King Charles III in the recently announced birthday honors list, revealed on Friday.

Amis, who passed away at the age of 73 from esophageal cancer at his residence in Florida, accepted the knighthood for his contributions to literature shortly before his death. The honors list states that his knighthood is effective from May 18, the day before his passing.

This recognition arrives 33 years after Amis’ father, the renowned comic novelist Kingsley, received the same honor from the late Queen Elizabeth II, who is Charles’s mother.

In addition to the knighthood, Ian McEwan, a close literary companion of Martin Amis, was also honored by King Charles III as a Companion of Honor. This distinction represents one of the highest accolades granted by the monarch, who ascended the throne in September following the demise of Queen Elizabeth II.

McEwan, acclaimed for his works such as “Amsterdam” and “Atonement,” expressed his astonishment at the unexpected honor, considering it as a highly favorable evaluation of his literary achievements.

Among the newly appointed members of the order are Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, and Professor John Bell, recognized for his significant contributions to medicine and medical research.

The order was established in 1917 by King George V, Charles’s great-grandfather. It acknowledges individuals who have made substantial and enduring contributions to the fields of arts, science, medicine, or government. The number of recipients is limited to a maximum of 65 at any given time. Notable current members include environmentalist David Attenborough, singer-songwriter Elton John, and Canadian author Margaret Atwood.
Ian Wright, the former Arsenal soccer player who has transitioned into a respected sports pundit, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the sport and his charitable endeavors. His recognition acknowledges his significant impact both on and off the field.

Davina McCall, the renowned television host known for her involvement in various popular reality programs, such as “Big Brother,” has become a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). This honor acknowledges her influential role in British television over the past few decades and her contributions to the entertainment industry.

Richard Moore, the chief of MI6, the overseas intelligence agency, has been knighted for his exceptional contribution to British foreign policy and national security. Leading the organization during a particularly challenging period following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Moore’s knighthood acknowledges his outstanding leadership.

Terry Waite, who endured nearly five years of captivity as a hostage in Lebanon until late 1991, has also been knighted for his charitable endeavors. This recognition honors his significant services to charity and highlights his remarkable resilience.

The honorees in the Birthday Honors list encompass not only public figures but also individuals who have demonstrated exceptional work within their communities. Over half, 52%, of the 1,171 recipients have been recognized for their outstanding contributions in voluntary or paid capacities, aligning with the primary focus of this year’s list as stated by the selection process organizers.

Among the recipients, exactly half are women, maintaining a trend seen for the third consecutive year where women constitute at least half of the list.

The oldest recipient, Joan Willett, aged 106, was awarded the British Empire Medal for her commendable charitable fundraising efforts for the British Heart Foundation. The youngest, 18-year-old Junior Jay Frood, received the same honor for his dedicated services to vulnerable children. Frood expressed his joy at receiving the award and emphasized the message that age should not limit one’s ability to be recognized for their accomplishments.

Approximately 11% of the awards were bestowed upon individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds. Although slightly lower than last year’s 13.3%, it still represents a higher proportion than during the 2010s. Additionally, the percentage of recipients with disabilities or long-term health conditions increased to 13% from last year’s 9.3%.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden commented on the honors system, noting its historical significance in recognizing extraordinary contributions made by individuals in Britain and beyond.

It is worth noting that British honors are also awarded at New Year’s and when prime ministers conclude their terms in office. The recent list released by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced criticism from opponents, who accused him of cronyism due to the knighthoods and honors bestowed upon numerous aides and allies.

The recipients of the honors are selected by civil servant committees based on nominations from the government and the public. Typically, the awards are presented by the monarch or a senior royal representative during investiture ceremonies held at Buckingham Palace.
