Dalvin Cook, the free agent running back and four-time Pro Bowl selection, had a close encounter with Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets during their practice session in Florham Park, N.J. on Sunday. He observed the team from the sideline while contemplating his potential future with them for the remainder of training camp, or perhaps with another team. Cook’s release from the Minnesota Vikings on June 8 was a move aimed at salary cap savings, according to a source familiar with the team’s decision.

Dalvin Cook’s visit to the New York Jets marks his first official visit as a free agent, but there is also interest from his hometown team, the Miami Dolphins, who are potential suitors. As the Jets evaluate their options, they must decide whether to extend an offer to Cook before he departs from their practice facility. The decision-making process for both Cook and the Jets is in full swing as they weigh their options for the upcoming season.

On August 10, just before his 28th birthday, Dalvin Cook was welcomed by enthusiastic fans chanting “Dal-vin Cooook! Sign that contract!” as he stepped onto the field during the Jets’ practice. He later responded to a post on X (formerly Twitter) with a green heart emoji, indicating his appreciation for the support.

During his visit, Cook had the chance to interact with some Jets players, including Aaron Rodgers, and also engaged in a brief conversation with team owner Woody Johnson. Jets coach Robert Saleh spoke highly of Cook, describing him as a very good young man, even though their interaction during the public practice was limited.

Cook has been vocal about his interest in the Jets during TV interviews, specifically mentioning them as being at the top of his list. He expressed confidence in the possibility of signing with the team, indicating that the odds of it happening were quite high in his estimation.

During an interview with “Good Morning Football,” Dalvin Cook expressed his admiration for the New York Jets and the unique opportunity they present. He emphasized their potential for building something special and highlighted the chance to be around a great quarterback like Aaron Rodgers, a four-time MVP, to learn and develop as a player. Cook sees the Jets’ coaching staff and overall atmosphere as indicators of a winning culture, making them an attractive destination.

However, Cook also acknowledged his interest in the Miami Dolphins, his hometown team. Playing for the Dolphins would be a dream scenario for him, describing it as a “Cinderella story.”

Despite the interest from the Dolphins, Cook was the guest of the Jets during his visit on Sunday. Now, the Jets are left waiting to see if they will make him an offer, and if he accepts, or if Cook will explore other options before making his decision. The situation remains uncertain as both parties assess their next steps in this intriguing free agency process.

Both the New York Jets and Dalvin Cook have expressed mutual interest in each other. The Jets requested Cook to undergo a physical to ensure the health of his surgically repaired shoulder before moving forward.

Cook, an accomplished running back, has achieved 1,000+ rushing yards in each of the past four seasons and holds the third spot on the Minnesota Vikings’ all-time rushing list with 5,993 yards accumulated over six seasons.

If Cook were to join the Jets, he would provide valuable depth and insurance in the backfield, especially with Breece Hall recovering from a knee injury that shortened his promising rookie season. The Jets currently have several running backs in their ranks, including Michael Carter, Zonovan Knight, Damarea Crockett, fifth-round draft pick Israel Abanikanda, and undrafted free agent Travis Dye.

In other news, wide receiver Garrett Wilson is currently sidelined due to a lower right ankle injury, and the Jets are being cautious with his recovery. Corey Davis is also absent from practice due to an illness, but he is expected to return on Monday. Randall Cobb has been activated from the physically unable to perform list and took part in practice.

As for the upcoming Hall of Fame game against the Cleveland Browns in Canton, Ohio, Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh confirmed that the starters, including rookie QB Zach Wilson and OT Mekhi Becton, are not expected to play. However, other players will see action in the game.
